First Coast Honorees
Speaking of Women’s Health, WJCT’s Public Broadcasting and Baptist Health are pleased to recognize the 2008 Honorees. These women have been selected for their outstanding efforts to enhance quality of life in the First Coast community through efforts in the fields of women’s health, well-being and personal safety.
Lynn Sherman
Lynn’s passion for community comes from her strong commitment to helping advance the lives of others. Lynn has worked for Baptist Health for more than 27 years and is currently the director of Community Health Initiatives. She has also served as program director for ”Tipping the Scale” Adolescent Advocacy and Intervention Mentoring Program, a multi-service agency dedicated to the support of under-served children in our community. Lynn is a member of Jacksonville Network for Strengthening Families, serves on the board of directors for the Northside Community Involvement, Inc., Community Asthma Partnership and the American Lung Association of Florida‘s Northeast Branch. She was recently selected to be a part of Jacksonville‘s Blueprint for Prosperity task force, facilitator for the ”Spirit of Caregiving” at Baptist Health and was selected as a participant in Baptist Health‘s Emerging Leaders Initiative 2005.
As a community health educator, Lynn has positively influenced the lives of hundreds of young women, providing these under-served youth with career guidance, one-to-one mentoring relationship with hospital employees, job skills training and summer employment. Lynn‘s life serves as a guidebook for the countless young women whose lives she touches on a daily basis.
Sandra Barata
Sandy is currently serving as the Administrative Director, Department of Pediatrics, University of Florida/ Jacksonville, Florida. Sandy has been with the University of Florida for more than 20 years. With more than 30 years of experience in health care administration; a nursing background coupled with a business management degree; along with a keen interest in assuring delivery of health care to children; Sandy continues to work tirelessly on behalf of children‘s issues. An award winning child advocate with emphasis on sickle cell, HIV/Aids and child abuse, Sandy continues today to speak out on behalf of children.
Sandy is an alumnus of Leadership Jacksonville, class of 2000. In 1999, Eckerd Drugs honored Sandy as one of 100 top women throughout the nation who have excelled in their community. In 2001, Sandy was selected as an EVE Award finalist, recognizing women who have excelled within the local community in a leadership capacity. In 2005 she was selected by the Jacksonville Business Journal as a Woman of Influence. Sandy participates on many civic committees and serves on several boards within the community. Sandy is a “people” person whose zeal for families and children’s issues motivate her on a daily basis. She is an avid football fan, enjoys time with family, boating, reading and traveling with husband Ray.
