NextGenTV Launch coming December 10
WJCT will soon broadcast a NEXTGEN TV signal (also called ATSC 3.0) for antenna users in partnership with News4Jax (WJXT) and WCWJ.
NEXTGEN TV offers the capability of 4K HDR ultra-high-definition video and movie theater-quality audio to bring what you’re watching to life in your living room. In the near future, additional interactive features from enhanced content and personalized recommendations to an advanced TV guide will be launched. NEXTGEN TV gives you the technology to not just watch, but also engage and interact with your entertainment.
Does this change affect me? This change only affects households that watch television using an antenna. If you do not use an antenna and you watch television through a cable, satellite or streaming service, no action is required.
What do I need to do to watch NextGenTV? To receive the NEXTGEN TV broadcasts, you must have a NEXTGEN TV-equipped television (or a NEXTGEN TV converter box) and you must receive WJCT using an over-the-air antenna. Please check with the manufacturer of your TV to check whether it's capable of receiving NextGenTV broadcasts.
Do I need to rescan my channels? If you have a NextGenTV-equipped TV and antenna and want to experience the new NextGenTV, then YES, you must rescan sometime AFTER 10am EST on December 10, 2024.
If you don't have a NextGenTV, you do not need to do anything to continue watching WJCT's channels (7.1-7.5). However, please note that some of WJXT and WCWJ's channels are moving and you WILL need to rescan to continue watching all of their channels regardless of what kind of TV you own.
OK, how do I rescan? You will need your TV remote to rescan. The process will vary depending on the brand of television that you have. Find the settings or menu option and look for menu options like “Channels,” “Rescan,”Autotuning,” “Add Channels,” or “Antenna.” If you’re not sure how to rescan your antenna, please check the user manual for your TV or the manufacturer's website.
How will I know if I'm watching "NextGen" WJCT? After you rescan on your NextGenTV set, your channel guide may show two versions of WJCT 7.1 and one may also display a "NextGenTV" logo beside it. Unfortunately, TV models vary and it's impossible for WJCT to answer specifically as to what your guide will show.
At launch, WJCT PBS 7.1 will be broadcast in the new format (along with the current ATSC 1.0 format) and it will be broadcast in higher resolution 1080p HD with DolbyVision. Our other channels (7.2-7.5) will continue to be broadcast in their existing format only.
Will I be unable to watch WJCT if I don't upgrade? You will still be able to watch all of WJCT's programming in the current ATSC 1.0 standard just as you do today without upgrading. This is true no matter how you receive our channels today.
For additional details on rescanning your TV, please see the FCC's website at https://www.fcc.gov/rescan
