The Jacksonville Community Council has identified mental-health treatment as an area in need of improvement on the First Coast. This hour-long program will focus on barriers people with mental illness face to getting treatment. Topics include the stigma associated with mental illness and how it manifests in work, school and family environments.
We’ll hear one man’s story of overcoming struggles with treatment and substance abuse.
We’ll also hear about the Community Council’s initiatives and the progress its committees have made since last fall’s Community Inquiry identified mental-health issues.
And a panel of mental health practitioners and advocates will help unpack the social and policy-related obstacles people with mental illness face. Panelists are Lutheran Services Florida Health Systems Vice President Christine Cauffield, Mental Health America Northeast Florida Executive Director Denise Marzullo, Daniel Memorial CEO Jim Clark and Freedom to Be Me founder Rico Bodin.
WJCT’s Melissa Ross will host this live event, simulcasting on WJCT-TV and WJCT 89.9 FM on May 28 at 8 p.m.
